Why would I buy a bike on your online shop, instead of from a shop?

Good folding bikes were more easily available in SA a couple of years ago when you had a choice between Dahon and Tern folding bikes; both world leading brands.  Those who bought one of these brands are still happy customers today. Unfortunately, the fluctuating value of the Rand forced both importers to cease any further imports into the country.

So the only folding bicycle available in SA at the moment is the Giant. Don’t get me wrong, I like Giant MTB’s and road bikes, but their folding bikes do not compare to a Dahon, Tern or a similar folding bike.

Who is your company?

Indigo Trading SA is the biggest folding bicycle company in South Africa and is run by Jan Wouters and his partner Jo Charnock.  We have sold +500 folding bicycles in the past, specialising in Dahon folding bikes.

"We are passionate about folding bikes and traveled with our folding bikes from Cairo to Cape Town, almost certainly a first in Africa."

Jan is the editor of a folding bike blog and Jo is the author of "A Hitch-Bikers Guide Through Africa, Cairo to Cape Town on A Folding Bike".  You won't find a team more passionate about folding bikes in this country!

What guarantees do you offer buying from your shop?

We've carefully sourced top of the line quality folding bikes for you.  We guarantee a hassle-free delivery to your door, and offer a 30 day money return if you're somehow not happy with your folding bike.

Do you have a shop in SA where I can see and test the bikes?

We currently have NO shop in South Africa. We order your bike from our Dahon supplier in the US.  We organise and pay all extra import duties and freight to your door.

How long does it take for a bicycle to get delivered to my door?

7 to 14 business days.

How does the bike arrive?

The bike will arrive in a cardboard box.  The bike is either 95 or 100% assembled, just add on pedals, pump up your tyres and go!  You will receive instructions on how to get your bike ready to roll.

PLEASE NOTE: Folding Bikes South Africa can not be held responsible for any delays caused by the South Africa Import and Customs Authorities.

How can I contact you regarding my order?

The best way to contact us is via email: or our contact page - we will endeavour to reply the same working day.

What if I'm not satisfied with my folding bike?

This is very unlikely... We have never had to refund anyone for any of the +500 folding bikes we have previously sold in SA. We're pretty confident in the quality of our bikes so we do offer you a 30 Day-Money-Back-Guarantee. If your bike proves to be sub-standard in any way, and you are not happy with your new bike, you can return it for a full refund within 30 days.
We're pretty sure that you will enjoy your new folding bike for years to come. If you find that we have not met your expectations, contact us and let us know how we can make it right.

Please note that we don't pay for the shipping of your bike to our warehouse in Cape Town.

Why are folding bikes more expensive than a normal, standard bike?

Eddy Merckx famously said: "A bike frame is only 7 tubes, the design is so perfect that a bike frame will never change. The geometry and materials change, but the actual bike frame has basically been the same for the last 100 years".

Folding bikes are expensive because they are complicated, both to design and to make. They're also made in much smaller volumes than non-foldable, brands.

Added to that is that folding bikes in South Africa are pretty much a new thing.  The market is small, so importing big quantities makes no sense.  Combined with a volatile exchange rate to the US dollar, folding bikes are more expensive.
